|Roma fan jailed for incident that led to serious brain injury for Liverpool supporter
sbobet222 An Italian football fan has been jailed for three years for violent disorder after a Liverpool supporter was left with a severe brain injury. Filippo Lombardi, 21, was cleared of inflicting grevious bodily harm by a court in Preston, England on Thursday (Friday morning NZ time).
But he will spend three years in prison after admitting the violent disorder charge. Lombardi, from Rome, was among a group of Roma fans who descended on Liverpool's Anfield ground for a European Champions Cup tie last April. The court heard closed circuit television footage showed Lombardi swinging a belt while another man punched Ireland-based Liverpool supporter Sean Cox, who fell to the ground, the Press Association reported.
A jury took nine hours to clear Lombardi - a former Roma academy goalkeeper - of the grevious bodily harm charge, but judge Mark Brown said: "Nonetheless, sbobet222 it is a feature of the case that during the violent disorder he [Cox] was severely injured and that cannot be ignored," he said.
"The violent disorder did not end with the attack on him because as he was lying unconscious on the ground it carried on regardless near to him and you, as is clear from the footage, were in the thick of it." Brown said there was no no doubt in his mind that Lombardi's purpose was "to cause a violent clash with Liverpool fans".
"The game will probably be remembered not because of the football skill on the field or the result, but because of the awful tragedy Mr Cox endured and the violent disorder that took place outside the ground." Cox, from County Meath in Ireland, sbobet222 suffered a severe traumatic brain injury in the attack and was still in a rehabilitation centre, the Press Association reported.
